Praying Psalm 91 is a powerful prayer of protection that we can use to cover ourselves and our families in prayer. As the Times of Trouble are upon us, the prayer of Psalm 91 is comforting and effective when prayed from the heart by those who love God and are in relationship with Him.
Does this mean that we as believers will not be attacked with sickness? No.
This chapter has been close to my heart ever since God called me to be an intercessor. Moses composed this psalm while ascending into the cloud of Mount Sinai, which time he recited these words.
Psalm contains truly incredible promises of protection, during trials, and attacks of the devil… But, regardless to the situation, God promised us that he will protect us, and take care of us. Each verse is so powerful.
He who dwells in the shelter of the Most High will abide in the shadow of the Almighty.
Praying Psalm 91 teaches us that God Covers and protect us.
The following promises are for a specific group of people who meet the criteria, of dwelling in the secret place. What does it mean to dwell? It means to live, to abide, remain, to inhabit, to settle down. This passage of scripture is saying for those who abide in this place, they are the ones who are promised safety, provisions, security, and favor.
Who are these who live here?
They are the Secret Place Dwellers. These are those who symbolically go into their room and close the door to pray. Their Father sees them in secret. The Secret Place is a place where intimacy occurs. The place where two parties become intimately acquainted. In this place of dwelling, conversation and fellowship occurs. There is a becoming One with the Spirit of God in intimacy. We cannot claim Psalm 91 promises over just everyone because everyone does not dwell in the SHELTER of the Most High. This is a spiritual address which comes with many benefits.
A key idea in this psalm is the idea of dwelling in God’s protection and taking refuge in him. This raises the question of, ‘where is your refuge?’ Where do you run for safety? Where is your trust when storms arise, and winds blows? There are so many things we can take refuge in. If any of the things you hold so dear to be taken away would you still have the same constant refuge? If your refuge is God, then any of these things can go or change and you can still know that you are safe and secure.
If you remain in Me and My words remain in you [that is, if we are vitally united and My message lives in your heart], ask whatever you wish, and it will be done for you. John 14:7 (Amplified)
To remain in Jesus means we must be connected to Him as a branch is connected to its vine. We achieve this connection by staying in fellowship with him. We are connected to Jesus when we believe His word, His word finds a home in us and we obey it.
He who dwells in the shelter of the Most High will abide in the shadow of the Almighty.
Notice that the word used in the Hebrew text for “secret place” refers to a shelter of protection. That name is your protection, and no number of devils can defeat you. The name of the Lord is his presence and hedge around you; it is your ultimate tower of protection – “The name of the LORD is a strong tower: the righteous runneth into it and is safe” (Pro.18:10).

PSALM 91 NLT (NEW LIVING TRANSLATION)
1 Those who live in the shelter of the Most High
will find rest in the shadow of the Almighty.
2 This I declare about the Lord:
He alone is my refuge, my place of safety;
he is my God, and I trust him.
3 For he will rescue you from every trap
and protect you from deadly disease.
4 He will cover you with his feathers.
He will shelter you with his wings.
His faithful promises are your armor and protection.
5 Do not be afraid of the terrors of the night,
nor the arrow that flies in the day.
6 Do not dread the disease that stalks in darkness,
nor the disaster that strikes at midday.
7 Though a thousand fall at your side,
though ten thousand are dying around you,
these evils will not touch you.
8 Just open your eyes,
and see how the wicked are punished. 9 If you make the Lord your refuge,
if you make the Most High your shelter,
10 no evil will conquer you;
no plague will come near your home.
11 For he will order his angels
to protect you wherever you go.
12 They will hold you up with their hands
so you won’t even hurt your foot on a stone.
13 You will trample upon lions and cobras;
you will crush fierce lions and serpents under your feet! 14 The Lord says, “I will rescue those who love me.
I will protect those who trust in my name.
15 When they call on me, I will answer;
I will be with them in trouble.
I will rescue and honor them.
16 I will reward them with a long life
and give them my salvation.”
